Blind Tiger Vineyards sit on 3.5 planted acres and is situated on the ridge between the villages of Winfield in Lake Country and Okanagan Center. Blind Tiger is operated and owned by Charlene and Jerry Wowchuck. The pair has been running the vineyard since 2007; however, the vineyard first planted the 3.5 acres of vines back in 2010.
The winery borrowed its name from the illegal bars that were operated during the Prohibition period in the United States. In 2015, the winery produced about 1,000 cases of wine after they received their approval from North Okanagan Organic Association, while in 2015; Blind Tiger produced close to 2,000 cases, a capacity they plan to maintain for the next coming years.
The Blind Tiger vineyard contains mature sections of Gewürztraminer, which is a block of Pinot that has enjoyed at least three seasons. The vineyard also has sections for Reisling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The farming operation at the vineyard is expected to produce close to 14 tons of grapes each year when running at full capacity.
As much as possible, the pair tries to grow the produce in a natural way, with as little chemical intervention as possible to ensure the high quality of the wine. As such, they only use natural compost fertilizers to maintain the healthy soil profile necessary for growing grapes. The winery also uses sulfur for fungal control on the berries and a flock of chicken for pest control purposes.
The Blind Tiger Riesling 2013 has a wonderful flavor of lime and green apples. The wine is dry and also has a nice tangy finish owing to the residual sugar. The Blind Tiger Pinot Noir 2013 has hints of strawberry, violet, and vanilla and on the palate; one can taste cherries and strawberries. The Blind Tiger Pinot Noir 2014 has subtle raspberry and strawberry aromas and a fine peppery finish. It also has a medium body, which explains why it is a favorite of the many people that come to the winery. Blind Tiger Speakeasy Red 2011 is a blend of a little Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has magnificent black cherry and vanilla aromas with a hint of chocolate for the finish.
Aside from the amazing wine, Blind Tiger Vineyards also wood-fired pizza from the Woodfire Pizza Truck situated close by. The bottles of Blind Tiger Pinot Noir pair perfectly with the fresh pizzas that are made from the truck, and they can be enjoyed on a patio overlooking the Wood Lake.
