The Four Mile House Pub situated at 199 Island Hwy, Victoria, is the handy work of the Haymes family. Located in the historic Tudor building that has no doubt housed its fair share of businesses in the past, the building houses West Shore’s first ever microbrewery. Four Mile Brewing Company joined Victoria’s renowned craft beer business, back in the early 80’s, before the Victoria craft business became renowned. Since then, 4-mile Brewing Company has expanded to include a 2, 500 square foot brewery in 2015, a store and brewpub; an entire Four Mile Brand, so to speak.
Since it opened, the West Shore beer scene has experienced so much growth, meaning that there was a large chunk of the market that the brewery could take advantage of (hence the expansion). The liquor store fills a 3,000-square-foot footprint, and it emphasizes selling local spirits from local distilleries, local craft beer from various breweries, as well as Four Mile beer (of course).
Over the last year, the company has grown to employ more than 100 people through all the 4 mile operations. With the change in laws allowing provincially owned liquor stores to operate on Sundays, during extended hours and on holidays, Four Mile Brewing is only going to get bigger and better with time.
With all the new competition, it is a thing of beauty to see that the first brewery in the West Shore is still continuing to be creative, innovative, and willing to pave the way for future generations of craft brewers.
Back in Four Mile House, the stainless steel fermentation tanks and the conditioning tanks are still intact. The brewery still uses the Austin Brick Kettle as the brewing process relies heavily on using a combination of English and West Coast hops. The ales featured are a wide product mix featuring: golden ale, India pale ale, brown ale, and, of course, the 4 Mile signature drink Best British. All the pints and beer are available for sale at the liquor store, although you can still taste your preferred brews on tap at the brewery.
