When Annex Ale Project arrived in mid-2017, it became one of the first of the new wave of post 2013 breweries that had an experienced brewmaster behind it. Along with partner Erica O’Gorman, Andrew Bullied, ex-head brewer at Village Brewery, planned to open a brewery based on the Pacific Northwest model, where Andrew’s love of hops would allow him to create unique beers that push the envelope for the discerning masses.
While Annex has a large variety of beers, Andrew keeps switching up recipes, so there seems to be always something new on tap. In fact, there are only two core beers; Metes and Bounds, an Extra Pale Ale, and Forward Progress, a Pale Ale. What Andrew calls his Small Batch beers are a collection of rotating recipes in a variety of styles. Annex was also the first brewery in Calgary to make their own sodas and their root beer and ginger beer have become almost as well-known as their craft beer. There is no kitchen, but a variety of light snacks are available.
What they have built is an open 50-person taproom and 10 hl. brewery right in the heart of the Barley Belt, just east of Macleod Trail, along the south (Red) LRT line. The taproom has a small 12 tap bar with chairs, long communal tables and whitewashed walls complete with large windows capable of being opened. It also has a garage door that allows access to a modest patio outside when the weather permits. This has proven to be a very popular spot and fills up quickly in the afternoons through into the evenings.
Annex is open Tuesday-Wednesday 3:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., Thursday 3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Friday from 1:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., Saturday noon-11:00 p.m. and Sunday noon-6:00 p.m. Closed Mondays. Tasters, flights, pints, growler fills, and package product are all available.
